The Friends of the Portage Senior Center is an organization formed to ensure both short and long-term funding for the services provided by the Portage Senior Center. It is incorporated as a non-profit (501-C3) organization. The Friends of the Portage Senior Center is a membership organization which sponsors fundraising events and activities to support the operations of the Portage Senior Center. Any business or interested person over the age of 18 is welcome to join this organization.
Meeting Operational Expenses: The Portage Senior Center is partially supported by the City of Portage with contributing funds from the State of Michigan. Classes, trips and special events are self-supporting and account for about 50 percent of the budget; 30 percent comes from the city; the remaining 20 percent comes from fundraising. Because the city is facing many demands for services from its citizens, this group of "Friends" has been formed to increase the portion of the budget which comes from gifts and donations. Unless you specify otherwise, your contribution will be put to work by meeting daily operating expenses. This is where funds are most needed.
Building the Endowment: The Friends of the Portage Senior Center Endowment Fund was established in 1995 through the Kalamazoo Foundation. Please consider a bequest or other form of deferred giving to help this fund grow and to ensure a future for senior services in Portage. Donors who give more than $500 belong to the Founders' Circle, and their names are listed on a brass plaque in the entry to the Portage Senior Center.
All gifts made to the Friends of the Portage Senior Center are tax deductible as permitted by law. Call the Portage Senior Center at (269) 329-4555 for information on donations, becoming a member of the Friends, or serving on the board.
