Give them Five to Stay Alive!
“Give them five to stay alive” says Mr. Paul Wells, former owner of Breakaway Bicycles and Chairperson of the Education Committee of the Kalamazoo Bicycle Club. Recent legislation passed in the City of Portage requires motorists to provide at least five feet of distance between themselves and bicyclists when passing. The City of Kalamazoo passed a similar law several months ago.
Many people do not realize that bicyclists enjoy the same rights and privileges in operating their bicycles on public roadways and at the same time are subject to all of the laws applying to motor vehicle operation.
Motorists are asked to be patient when passing slower moving bicyclists and give them the appropriate cushion of safety as designated by this new law.
