Wanted: Project Ideas to Enhance the Community
The City of Portage is looking for your ideas to enhance the community or your neighborhood! The recently launched Neighborhood and Community Enhancement Program is intended to fund public space project proposals submitted by resident groups, non-proft organizations, as well as neighborhood and business associations. Examples of project proposals include improvements that promote places to gather, community art projects, sidewalk or trail enhancements, street tree plantings, street lighting, gateway signs and landscaping, community gardens or other similar improvements.
Funding for up to two enhancement projects during Fiscal Year 2017-2018 is provided through the City of Portage Capital Improvement Program. Projects must be located on public property and have a minimum cost of $10,000.
A competitive process will determine which projects will be implemented. Preference will be given to proposals that:
- Enhance neighborhood/community appearance
- Enhance neighborhood health and safety
- Promote a greater sense of community
- Address a known neighborhood deficiency
- Complement other neighborhood improvements
- Promote social interaction
- Positively impact a significant number of residents
- Have longevity greater than 10 years
Download an application for project proposals here. Applications can also be obtained at the Department of Community Development (7900 South Westnedge Avenue).
Completed applications must be submitted by September 1, 2017. Project proposals will be reviewed and considered by the Portage Planning Commission and City Council. The winning projects will be announced in early 2018. With essential input from the project advocate(s), implementation by the City of Portage will begin, with a targeted completion in June 2018.
