City to Launch Property Reinspection Project

Beginning in June 2012, the City of Portage Office of the City Assessor will launch the 2012 Property Reinspection Project, which will be conducted in various Portage neighborhoods.  The Michigan State Tax Commission recommends that municipalities complete an inspection of 20% of all properties located within its borders each year.  The goal of the inspections is to verify major property class assignments and to identify unrecorded major property improvements for property valuation purposes.

The 2012 Property Reinspection Project will take place in 33 neighborhoods across the city as identified in the Reinspection Area Maps.  An exterior inspection from the street will be made of homes in the identified areas.  As previously mentioned, property appraisers will focus on property class and unrecorded improvements made to the homes so that an accurate property appraisal can be verified.
