Insurance Program Offered by Private Company to Repair Broken Utility Lines Likely of No Benefit

Recent mailings from a private company promoting the purchase of an insurance program to repair broken water and sewer lines have been received by Portage residents. In Portage, most residential water customers have a meter in their basement, with the remainder having a meter located in a pit outside their home on their property. The responsibility to repair the water service line between the water main pipeline in the street to the customer’s meter (most often in the customer's basement) lies with the City of Portage water utility (United Water).  It is likely that the water service protection offered by the private company would be of no benefit to most City of Portage utility customers.

If you should have any questions about the location of your water meter or sewer utilities, please contact the Transportation & Utilities Department at (269) 329-4422.  Any additional questions regarding your water utility may be directed to the city’s utility contractor, United Water, at (269) 324-9235.
