9/24/2017 12:00 PM

FREE event at Celery Flats Historical Area (7335 Garden Lane, Portage)

The Grain Elevator Exhibition will take you on a journey of Portage’s history, showing you what various parts of the city looked, then and now. Skill demonstrations will include book binding presented by the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center, basket weaving, a spinning wheel, wood carving (PSC Wood Carvers) and hearthside cooking. Parks & Recreation, in collaboration with the Portage Historic District Commission, is excited to once again offer Historical Tours of Celery Flats. The FREE event series runs 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. on select Sundays at the Celery Flats Historical Area (7335 Garden Lane, Portage). Each event will feature a different historical theme. The tours include stops at Stuart Manor, The Grain Elevator, Schoolhouse and the Hayloft Theatre. Each building will have a guide to provide details on its rich history and little known facts. Along the walk through Celery Flats, visitors will also find a historical exhibition in the Grain Elevator and demonstrations of everyday skills from past times. For more information on these events, contact the Parks & Recreation Department at (269) 329-4522.
