2. Award-Winning Public Schools

 

  • Washington Post’s “Best High School” ranking includes Central and Northern High Schools.
  • The District received “Academic State Champion” status by The Center for Michigan.
  • Northern High School’s Media Center selected as the “top school library” in Michigan by the American Association of School Libraries (top 35 in nation).
  • First district in Michigan to have officially authorized Confucius classrooms, offering early exposure to Chinese language / culture.
  • City of Portage, Portage Schools, and the Portage District Library recently launched a unique cooperative marketing effort to promote services to residents and businesses.
  • The Portage Connection, our e-magazine for alumni, received the top award for electronic communications by the Michigan School Public Relations Association.
  • Michigan Journalism Teacher-of-the-Year for 2012. Meanwhile, Michigan Teacher-of-the-Year for faculty members during 2011 included Earth Science, Physics and Forensics.
  • Community support as seen through the recent bond campaign resulting in one new high school; a partially new and partially renovated high school, two new elementary schools, and technology upgrades district-wide.
  • Continuing support of the District by our two school foundations, both with volunteer governing boards: Portage Education Foundation (est. 1990) and Portage Athletic Foundation (est. 1981).
  • More than 70% of our teachers have earned their master’s degree.
