On-Call Firefighter (Paid) - Part-Time - REGISTRATION CLOSED
If you have the desire to serve your community and receive professional training, consider this opportunity. The City of Portage is seeking candidates for the paid position of On-Call Firefighter. After completing the training academy, On-Call Firefighters respond to calls for medical assistance, rescue operations, fire control, cleaning and maintaining equipment.
- Must be at least 18 by May 26, 2010, possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent and a valid MI Driver License with an good record.
- Training academy is September 2010 through May 2011, two nights per week and every other Saturday. Training includes Firefighter I & II, Medical First Responder and Hazardous Materials.
- Starting salary is $7.40/hr. during training and $10.75/hr. upon successful completion of all required state certification exams.

RECRUITING PROCESS:
1. Attend one of our INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS
(encouraged, but not required):
Saturday, May 8, 2010 at 10 AM at Central Fire Station,
7830 Shaver Rd., Portage, MI,
OR Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 7 PM at Central Fire Station,
7830 Shaver Rd., Portage, MI.
2. Sign up for the Written Test. Call 329-4533 to sign up.
(No prior firefighting experience is necessary to pass the test.)
Sign up Deadline is Wednesday, May 19th by 5 PM.
3. Submit your application. Due prior to test date.
Submit to Employee Development, Portage City Hall or apply online by selecting the desired option below.
4. Take Written Test on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at 6 PM at Portage City Hall. (Those who pass, proceed to the next step.)
5. Attend Practice Physical Agility Test (optional) -
Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 9 AM.

6. Take Final Physical Agility Test (required) -
Saturday, June 12, 2010 @ 9 AM.
7. Those who pass, must also successfully complete an interview, background investigation and physical examination, including drug/alcohol screen.
