The City of Portage maintains a fire department comprised of a combination of full-time career firefighters supplemented by a cadre of on-call members. The career firefighters staff three fire stations on a 24-hour basis. On-call firefighters respond from within the community to assist during incidents.
The Fire Prevention Division, under the direction of the Fire Marshal, works to insure a fire-safe community. This is accomplished through public education including fire station tours and annual presentations in Portage Public Schools. Members of the department also work with local businesses to assist them and their employees with providing a fire safe place to work or shop. The Fire Marshal also oversees the annual fire inspections of retail, commercial, industrial and multi-family residential properties in the city. As a result of these efforts, Portage is fortunate to have a low rate of serious fires.
In addition to responding to fires, the Fire Department also responds to requests for emergency medical services, personal injury accidents, and a variety of technical rescue situations including vehicle extrication, confined space rescue, high angle rescue, trench rescue and ice rescue. Recently added to the responsibilities of the members is the responsibility for responding to suspected terrorist or weapons of mass destruction incidents in the community. Ongoing training to maintain proficiency in these skills is a big part of the firefighter’s job. Several members have received specialized training in specific areas of concern. Members are also trained to respond to hazardous materials incidents that may occur on transportation corridors or in local industry. They will be able to take preliminary steps until specialized technicians can arrive to mitigate an incident.
The Portage Fire Department is staffed by a crew of well-trained, professional individuals who stand ready to respond to assist the citizens and visitor to our city whenever the need should arise.
