  1. Photo Contest

    October 1, 2020 - June 14, 2021 @ Portage Parks

    Along with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Portage Parks & Recreation is seeking submissions of photos from all seasons. Winning photos will be selected from four categories: Seasonal Changes; Outdoor Recreation; Flora, Fauna & Wildlife; and Youth (14 years and under). Photos must be taken in a City of Portage park by June 14, 2021. Limit three entries per category, per person. Photos will be judged by a panel of area photography professionals with prizes awarded for first, second and third place in each category. Entry costs are $10 for up to three entries per category, except Youth; $5 for up to three entries in the Youth category (i.e., maximum $30 for nine entries). Prizes: 1st - $75; 2nd -$35 and 3rd -$25 for each of the four categories. Visit the Parks & Recreation Events page at mypark.portagemi.gov for full category descriptions and complete contest rules.

  2. Ping Pong League - Session 2

    We are just getting warmed up. Ping pong is a great low impact sport suitable for any athlete! Meet new friends in our recreational ping pong league. Two 10-week sessions are offered. All games for both sessions will start at 6 and 7 PM. Session 2: Wednesdays, January 6 – March 10. Registration for the second session will begin on November 9 and close December 18.     Rotating exhibitions that focus on local arts and history are featured at Portage City Hall throughout the year. The exhibitions are free to the public and are open Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 4 PM. Ever wonder about the names on some of the streets and other areas in Portage? Discover the history behind names such as Austin, Kilgore, Milham, Dry Prairie and others that created a footprint on the City of Portage we know today. If you have photos or stories to share about people who shaped the early settlement of Portage from 1830 to the early 1900’s, please contact Portage Parks & Recreation to add their history to our archives.

If you are intrigued to learn of your family’s history, join a member of the Kalamazoo Valley Genealogical Society (KVGS) and ZOOM with us to discover resources that build and grow your family tree! If you have deep roots in the Portage area, we would be very interested in hearing more about your ancestry and their imprint on Portage! A computer and internet connection is required and be sure to complete the fun and interesting work in between classes.     Calling all Junior Rangers! Work on your Ranger apprenticeship with these 60 minute Earn-A-Badge workshops. These sessions are focused on helping Junior Ranger apprentices complete the requirements to earn their badges towards becoming an official Junior Ranger. Rangers and staff will help kids and their families complete these activities! Each session will be dedicated to one Badge.
