  1. Photo Contest

    October 1, 2020 - June 14, 2021 @ Portage Parks

    Along with the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Portage Parks & Recreation is seeking submissions of photos from all seasons. Winning photos will be selected from four categories: Seasonal Changes; Outdoor Recreation; Flora, Fauna & Wildlife; and Youth (14 years and under). Photos must be taken in a City of Portage park by June 14, 2021. Limit three entries per category, per person. Photos will be judged by a panel of area photography professionals with prizes awarded for first, second and third place in each category. Entry costs are $10 for up to three entries per category, except Youth; $5 for up to three entries in the Youth category (i.e., maximum $30 for nine entries). Prizes: 1st - $75; 2nd -$35 and 3rd -$25 for each of the four categories. Visit the Parks & Recreation Events page at mypark.portagemi.gov for full category descriptions and complete contest rules.

  5. Smart Cycling: Traffic Skills 101 Course

    The Smart Cycling Program is a great opportunity to learn how to ride your bike safely! This curriculum is certified by the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) and taught across the USA by League Certified Instructors with extensive riding and teaching experience. The course incorporates on-line and in-class learning, parking lot maneuvering drills and a group ride. You will learn: » Basic bike fit, inspection, and maintenance » How to ride safely and legally in traffic » How to improve your riding skills » How to avoid crashes » And much more Attendees will need a helmet and working bicycle to participate. This program is for cyclist 18 years and over. Space is limited. To register, visit mypark.portagemi.gov and click on the purple Recreation Activities & Facility Rentals button. Registration deadlines are April 25 for the May 8 course and June 5 for the June 12 course. Scholarships are available. This course is also a pre-requisite to become a Lead Cycling Instructor.

  9. Lanterns on the Lake

    May 15, 2021, 8:00 PM - 9:30 PM @ Ramona Park & Beach

    Light up the lake with a lantern that honors loved ones or float words of hope and encouragement. Feel hope and happiness with your community as you remember those you loved, together. Bring a picnic dinner to enjoy while you decorate your lantern. Live music will play until launch time at 9:30 PM. Participation is limited to 100 people due to social distancing requirements. Registration is required by May 12 for each person wishing to attend. Visit mypark.portagemi.gov and click on the Recreation Activities & Facility Rentals button. Lantern kits, including a floating lantern to launch on the water and a marker to decorate your lantern with your family, will be distributed to each registered participant beginning at 8 PM.   12. Junior Ranger Earn-A-Badge - Endurance Badge

    The Junior Ranger Club is a fun way to learn more about the Portage Park system and to earn an official Junior Ranger shield as a wildlife steward. The Junior Ranger Club is an activity-based program offering eight different badges that can be earned by completing specific activities: arts, endurance, health, history, nature, science, service and survival. Need a little help with finishing your badges? During these programs, a Junior Ranger may bring an adult and together, work on specific badge activities. These programs are free, include supplies and are led by Parks staff. You can attend just one or all of the programs. Based on COVID restrictions, sessions may be offered virtually with supplies available for pick up at City Hall. All programs run from 6 – 7 PM. Space is limited, so do not wait to register!
