Life Among the People of Calcutta’s Slums Thursday, February 27 2 – 4 PM $3 Members / $5 Non-Members Presented by: Robert WeirCompared to Western standards, life in Calcutta, India – with a population density of 45,000 people per square mile – might appear to be rife with poverty. But at the human level, there is profound resiliency and industriousness, resourcefulness and generosity, cooperation and community that enrich the people who live there. Author and book editor Robert Weir lived amongst these people for ten months while helping a friend craft her memoir about teaching children who, without an education, would grow up cleaning toilets or pulling a rickshaw like their parents. In his presentation, “Life Among the People in Calcutta’s Slums,” Robert invites you to visit this “urban village” where people gather in the outdoor commons area to pump water, bathe, and cook community meals in large cauldrons; men and boys gather to discuss neighborhood issues; women and girls collectively raise each other’s children; teens play caroms, cricket and jacks with lumps of coal; and more. Please call (269) 329-4555 to register.
