Voter Registration
Requirements
To be eligible to register to vote you must be:
- A Michigan resident (at the time you register)
- A resident of the City of Portage for at least 30 days (when you vote)
- A United States citizen
- At least 18 years of age (when you vote)
- Not currently serving a sentence in jail or prison (after completing a sentence you can participate in elections without restriction)
Registering to Vote Within 14 Days of an Election
Beginning 14 days before an election, voter registration is available only in person at the Portage City Clerk’s Office. Plus, you must provide proof of Portage residency. Acceptable documents include:
- Michigan driver's license or state ID
- Current utility bill
- Bank statement
- Paycheck or government check
- Other government documents
Make Sure You Are Eligible
To register online, you must have a valid Michigan driver's license or state ID. If you don't have one, you can still register in person or by mail. If you are registering within 14 days of an election, you must register in person and show proof of residency.

Eligible voters can register online at the Michigan Voter Information Center at Michigan.gov/VoterRegistration
Application Processing
The Portage City Clerk's Office will issue you a voter registration card upon processing your application. It will contain your voter information and voting location (precinct). Sometimes polling locations can change so it's always a good idea to double check before heading out to vote.

Complete the Michigan Voter Registration Application (PDF). You can also call (269) 329-4511 and we will be happy to mail you an application. If you have never registered to vote in Michigan and are submitting your application by mail, you must include additional information to verify your identity. Follow the instructions provided with the application (link above) and be sure to sign it.

Visit the Portage City Clerk's Office and complete the Michigan Voter Registration Application.You can also download and print a copy online here or call (269) 329-4511 and we will be happy to mail you an application. Applications are also available at the following locations:
- Portage City Clerk's Office at City Hall (7900 South Westnedge Avenue)
- Kalamazoo County Clerk's Office (201 West Kalamazoo Avenue)
- Secretary of State branch offices
- State agencies that provide public assistance or services for people with disabilities
If you have never registered to vote in Michigan and mail your application, you will need to include additional information to verify your identity. Follow the instructions included with the application and make sure you sign it.

Bring your completed application to the City Clerk's Office at City Hall. A member of our team will take your form for processing, and you won't need to do anything else.

- If you're from Michigan and attend school here, you can register to vote at your school address or your home address.
- If you're from Michigan and attend school outside the state, register at your home address in Michigan.
- If you're not from Michigan but go to school here, register to vote at your school address in Michigan.
If you have a Michigan driver's license or state ID and you are registered to vote in Michigan, your voter registration address and the address on your license or ID will be the same. If you change your address on one, it will automatically change on the other. The Secretary of State will mail you a new address sticker to place on your license or ID card.
