Juneteenth

Recognizing the federal holiday, Juneteenth (June 19, 1865), honors the anniversary of the freedom of the last African Americans who were enslaved in the United States. To commemorate this significant date in our history and better understand the evolution of our nation and its people, the City of Portage hosts the annual Juneteenth Celebration at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park. This week-long event provides the opportunity to reflect upon and learn about African American resilience and achievement. It also allows patrons to celebrate Freedom Day as they explore a “Garden of Hope,” participate in the self-led tour, reflect on meditative benches, and view the interpretive kiosk.
