As winter arrives, the City of Portage works diligently to ensure our streets are safe and passable, no matter how severe the snowfall. With 221 miles of city streets to cover, snow removal crews are out as early as 3:30 AM to begin plowing, sanding, and salting.
How You Can Help
Residents play an important role in making snow removal as safe and efficient as possible. A new State of Michigan law requires all drivers to stay 200 feet away (13 car lengths) from all snowplows on roadways.
- Please also keep the following city ordinances and state laws in mind:
- Basketball Hoops: Basketball stands are not permitted in the city right-of-way.
- Street Parking: From December 1 to March 15, parking is prohibited on city streets between 2 AM and 6 AM.
- Trash and Recycling: On collection days, keep bins on the curb and out of the roadway.
- Snow Removal from Private Property: It is illegal to push snow from driveways, sidewalks, or parking lots onto public streets.
