The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5855 has canceled the annual Portage Memorial Day Parade. However, the Memorial Day Ceremony sponsored by the American Legion Post 207 will take place at 11 AM at Veterans Memorial Park.
Gary VerMeulen, who coordinates the Memorial Day Parade for the VFW Post 5855, said, “We believe the cancelation of the Memorial Day Parade again this year is the right thing to do. Our members look forward to coming together on Memorial Day in 2022 to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”
“We will certainly miss the Memorial Day Parade again this year but are grateful that we can safely gather at the Veterans Memorial to honor our fallen veterans,” said City Manager Joe La Margo. The City of Portage is thankful to the VFW Post 5855 and American Legion Post 207 for their work every year to recognize the incredible sacrifices our veterans make to protect our country.
The American Legion Post 207 Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Park at 300 Library Lane. The ceremony will begin at 11 AM on Memorial Day, Monday, May 31. Parking is available at the First Reformed Church of Portage and Portage City Hall. Parking at the Portage District Library is unavailable due to construction at that location.
