The City of Portage Neighborhood and Community Enhancement Program is intended to fund public space project proposals submitted by resident groups, non-profit organizations and neighborhood and/or business associations. Examples of project proposals may include improvements that promote places to gather, community art projects, sidewalk or trail enhancements, street trees, street lighting, gateway signage or landscaping, community gardens, or other similar improvements.
Funding for up to two projects during the 2018-2019 fiscal year is provided through the City of Portage Capital Improvement Program (CIP). CIP-funded projects must be located on public property and have a minimum cost of $10,000. Up to two project proposals may be implemented and selecting the proposals for funding involves a competitive process with preference given to projects that:
- Enhance neighborhood/community appearance
- Enhance neighborhood health and safety
- Promote a greater sense of community
- Address a known neighborhood deficiency
- Complement other neighborhood improvements
- Promote social interaction
- Positively impact a significant number of residents
- Have longevity greater than 10 years
Completed application forms must be submitted no later than September 4, 2018. Project proposals will subsequently be reviewed by the Planning Commission and City Council during fall 2018. In early 2019, projects will be selected for implementation. The selected project(s) should be completed by June 30, 2019. While the city will complete the public space improvements, ongoing engagement with the applicant will be essential for a successful project.
