[ARCHIVED] Fireworks Safety

Fireworks

The Portage Fire Division recommends enjoying a professional fireworks display.  If you choose to ignite consumer fireworks, an understanding of the rules is required.  Consumer fireworks can only be used the day before, the day of and the day after a national holiday until 1 a.m. (So for Independence day, July 3, July 4 and July 5.)  Consumer fireworks are prohibited from being used on public property.  View the Code of Ordinances pertaining to consumer fireworks.

Safe fireworks practices should always be used.  Never hold a lit firework in your hand; always light the firework on the ground and back away as soon as it is lit.  Always keep a safe distance from buildings so sparks or embers from the firework do not ignite them.  Finally, always keep a water source available, such as a garden hose, in the event a spark or ember ignites nearby combustible material.

Paper lanterns are extremely dangerous.  Releasing an open flame into the air with no control mechanism can result in building or wildland fires.  Always tether a paper lantern so that you maintain control of the lantern while it is burning.  Paper lanterns should never be used if there is even a slight breeze and are prohibited from being used on public property.

To report a fire, call 9-1-1.
