Join the City of Portage on Friday, June 17 at 10 AM for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park Dedication Ceremony at the corner of Constitution Boulevard and Martin Luther King Drive. The event marks the beginning of construction on the new Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park and commemorates Juneteenth.
The land for the development of Martin Luther King Jr. Park was donated by Village Green Properties LLC. Construction is expected to be complete in fall 2022. The park design was developed by a committee including Dr. Romeo Phillips, past City of Portage Councilmember and community advocate; Donna Odom, former Executive Director for the Society for History and Racial Equity; Sydney Davis, Executive Director for the Black Arts and Cultural Center; and Dr. Monifa Jumanne, Jumanne and Associates, community advocate.
The park will include a series of five bronze sculptures highlighting Dr. King and his messages, a “Garden of Hope,” “Beacon of Light” landscape corridors, interpretive graphics highlighting Dr. King’s legacy, and meditative benches and shade trees.
Representatives from the City of Portage, Portage City Council, Balkema Construction Inc., and local news agencies will be in attendance in addition to other local leaders.
The event is FREE and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. Thank you to Celebration Cinema for allowing parking in their lot nearest to the park entrance.
